Pennsylvania State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta hosted a critical tele-town hall to provide vaccine information to Philadelphia residents. Joining the call to assist in answering questions was Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Shara Epstein from the Philadelphia Health Department.
The hour-long forum, managed by Telephone Town Hall Meeting (TTHM), provided a significant opportunity for Rep. Kenyatta and Dr. Epstein to address the COVID-19 vaccine, as well as to address additional significant state and local issues. With over 35,000 residents called and nearly 50 questions submitted by event participants, the call was successful in educating and updating Philadelphians in Representative Kenyatta’s district.
As expected, questions from participants mainly focused on the safety, availability and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Epstein fielded several of the questions, and spoke about the distribution plan for Philadelphia. Vaccine distribution is progressing slowly from the Federal Government, but Dr. Epstein also reported that the City had given out over 30,000 COVID-19 vaccines to date with more arriving every week.
Representative Kenyatta also took questions specifically regarding the rise in unemployment due to COVID. He provided a detailed account of the process that residents can follow if they are having trouble receiving their unemployment benefits.
“Equally important to developing the COVID-19 vaccine is now communicating clearly and frequently when, where and how residents across the Country can get the vaccine. Telephone Town Hall Meeting, as evidenced by this tele-town hall call in Philadelphia with Representative Kenyatta, provides an effective and efficient means to communicate with residents,” said Curt Cerveny, President of Telephone Town Hall Meeting.
